In terms of maintenance and servicing, it also has good repairability.” Polyurethane topcoats are considered a safe choice for both small and large yachts and are well established on the market. The system can be applied with a spray gun and is also rollable.High Solid Base Coat /Clear Coat (BC/CC)The crucial advantage of the Base Coat /Clear Coat (BC/CC) system lies in the last, extra layer – the clear coat. The BC/CC build has the greatest Hiding Power and exceptional Depth of Image (DOI) of all three systems. The acrylic topcoat has a faster drying time, offering less surface area for dirt particles to adhere to the still-wet paint film. This topcoat is also slightly softer than a Polyurethane or BC/CC system, allowing for a very good polishability once dried. “With Acrylic Topcoat X, we have a product on the market for a good two years that plays on the level of the other two systems in terms of gloss level – even surpassing them in some cases," commented Thomas. Acrylic Topcoat X is frequently used in Europe as well, specifically Italy, Greece, and Turkey, with an excellent foothold in the US with smaller yacht users. The refit and painting conditions in these locations are also not necessarily cleanroom quality, and sea winds create particles in the air that could harm the wet paint. A closer look onboard the first 50m Mangusta 165 REV superyacht

In less than ten years <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a> has evolved from a small brokerage office in Fort Lauderdale with a couple dozen staff members, into a powerhouse full-service international superyacht brokerage, with a global clientele and an impressive portfolio of yachts for sale, charter and management. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219125/image/large-76d0c4739a3321cb41031ed70f0e4fd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219125">While the superyachting industry as a whole has of course grown in recent years, approximately doubling in size, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> has outperformed the sector growth enormously, expanding tenfold in the last eight years alone, and in the process overtaking many more established industry competitors. Daniel Ziriakus, the company’s President &amp; COO, has been with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> for most of that decade, and he sat down with SYT to share his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities that superyacht brokerage firms face today, and the secrets of N&amp;J’s success to date.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219124/image/large-eb22920ece83e9b24e076486379b2f0f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219124">“Data has been a major factor in our success, allowing us to spend our money wisely in the areas where it will have the greatest return”, explains Ziriakus. “And our marketing capabilities have also helped us to look different, especially from the more hidebound of our competition. Over the past decade we have built a comprehensive support structure in-house which encompasses marketing, business intelligence, tech development, PR and events, in-house video production (which almost no one else has), and strategic partnerships. These marketing teams consist of more than 30 people on staff, and include an intelligence team dedicated to data research. I really don’t know of any other brokerage firm that has invested so much in these categories, and it has definitely helped us to differentiate ourselves with our clients and win more and more of our competitor’s business.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35342/image/large-bdee32c15b4a067e6002354accf83f97.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35342">The brokerage's acquisition in 2021 by industry titan <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> has certainly given the company the financial firepower to make this transition more quickly, but there was always a focus on data analytics and marketing, even prior to the takeover. “Many brokerage houses have just one or two employees who provide their yachting data, but it's generally a slow and outdated manual process that is rarely capable of finding the right yachts first – something which is one of the most important roles expected of a broke by their clientele. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> however, we have our ‘Deep Data department’ that sources data from all over the world through various custom developed applications as well as significant human resources, making sure our brokers have the most accurate and acute information in the industry, as well as having it first.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219126/image/large-206b550a22422538d353d3e1d1b64044.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219126">“If you strip it down to its basic tenets, the world of yacht broking is an information and facilitation business,” says Ziriakus. “The value of data within the yachting industry can be pivotal to a company’s success.” This could not have been more evident than in recent years, when major market high, such as 2021 and early 2022, saw scares supply and very few superyachts of pedigree were hitting the market. Content creation is a leading strategy for the brand, and it employs not just one but five videographers and editors who shoot high end productions of yachts all over the world. While this isn’t in and of itself particularly revolutionary, the work the production team does with former broker David Seal is.Seal runs a YouTube channel for the company called Yachts for Sale, and shoots video content for the brokerage firm. The true value lies in the business development opportunities that arise from coverage on such a popular channel. “These infotainment-style videos are a fantastic asset,” explains Ziriakus, “not only because we create cool and interesting content, but because we visit shipyards, talk to clients and experts, and that content directly brings in leads to both the brokerage and the charter departments. Befit for a tender belonging to such an outstanding mothership, the Topaz Convertible is suave, sophisticated and a point of pride for owner and guests to embark from when perusing the treasures onland. With a penchant for speed and a requirement to reach some of the most remote and daring dive locations in the world, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had a challenge. A challenge that a ready-made solution could never cater to. The marketplace for ready-made solutions might be thriving, but it’s not perfect.Australia’s resident designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/98" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sam Sorgiovanni Designs P/L (Company)">Sam Sorgiovanni</a> oversaw her design – and most definitely delivered. The Octopus Dive Tender is refined, lavish and brimming with amenities expected on a yacht, not a tender. She can carry as many as 10 guests, who can kick back in utmost comfort in her plush saloon, and she has a generous aft deck for seamless access to the water. Over the last decade and a half, the Italian designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6168" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Francesco Struglia Design (Company)">Francesco Struglia</a> has built a career working with some of the top names in the yachting industry. Cutting his teeth with the inimitable <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuccon International Project (Company)">Zuccon International Project</a>, Struglia has learnt from the best since his very earliest days in design, cultivating a childhood passion for drawing into a formidable career as consultant to one of the world’s largest shipyards. Today his studio is focusing its energies on the superyacht sector, and in addition to his yachting , Struglia is also building a name for himself as the designer of bespoke and production yachting furniture. We sat down with Francesco for an interview, to find out more about his mutli-faceted approach to all-things design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256239/image/large-9c6a34846b801d1a5739b31a9685bc08.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256239">“I was very fortunate during my studies to have been taught by Giovanni Zuccon,” explained Francesco, “who took me under his wing and brought me into the amazing world of yacht design. I learned the intricacies of fibreglass yacht construction, and, working on exterior and layout planning, was given the opportunity to pour my artistic passion into the creation of unique vessels. It was very inspiring.” After his period at the Italian studio, Francesco turned to Northern Europe and joined the ranks of the famous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega Architects</a> under Frank Laupman, who Struglia believes is the very best in the industry within the 50 metre segment. In the Netherlands, Struglia had the opportunity to combine his passionate and romantic Italian design approach, with an effective, creative, and time scheduled real Dutch workflow. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256236/image/large-292dd35fccc32701de1aba2b4176b31b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256236"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256234/image/large-407f33146083d390d9d8c9189e3c1bd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256234">It wasn’t long after his tenure at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega</a> that Struglia found himself back in Italy and working in the Style Department Team of Giovanna Vitelli at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>. Working closely alongside the technical teams, Francesco became closely entrenched within the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> styling, and after many years of work, with his new own studio established, he was given the opportunity to pitch for a new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> motor boat series, the series which later became the Verve, styled in its entirety by Francesco himself. The Verve has now sold more than 100 units, far exceeding any expectations Francesco, or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>, had for the model.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256246/image/large-91ba3e6484039c80652e30d433423f3b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256246"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248918/image/large-6ac433b20523fe5f7812fa6f4e2f3675.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248918">Then in the late 2010’s, the studio was contacted by Giovanna Vitelli and asked to work on the start of a new series, signing the first model this time for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. “It really began in an informal way, building that strong relationship with the shipyard over a number of years meant that they had faith that I was capable of distilling the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> mentality and design ethos into a new model. We worked closely with the Benetti team on what became the Motopanfilo series, which was always intended to be a classic motor yacht series.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248906/image/large-8ef9f449ef54f2a5e58f662937bea44d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248906">Eight hulls of the 37-metre Motopanfilo series have now been sold, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10815" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="eh²36.8m (120'9&quot;)Benetti SpA2022">Eh²</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hayat36.8m (120'9&quot;)Benetti SpA2022">Hayat</a> both launched in 2022. The yacht was Struglia’s first solo superyacht design and it's no surprise that the model has been such a success, with his deep and intimate understanding of the shipyard’s styling. In fact to this day, the studio works closely with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a>, consulting the designers, both in-house and externally, on new models. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248911/image/large-16bb8aaf031363dd431d75c3c908a53b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248911">It is clear in speaking to Francesco that he has a true form-equals-function mentality when it comes to design, something he has no doubt learned over a career with some of the industry's top designers. Removing the superfluous and distilling his designs right down to include only what is necessary means that his lines are characteristically minimal, flowing and uninterrupted. It's this same design ethos that the studio takes to all of its design projects, working both on industrial projects and designing bespoke furniture.In 2020, the studio entered into a design partnership with ARAS Italia, an Italian-pedigree company working with artisans in the leather industry and which has an excellent portfolio in the automotive industries. The goal of the partnership was to design two driving seats for the yachting sector and a bar stool for the luxury yachting furniture sector and the first three products were presented by ARAS at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE - 2022">2022 METSTRADE</a> to much applause from the industry. Interview with Italian designer Francesco Struglia: Navigating the world of yacht and furniture design

Changes in yachting are notoriously glacial – until last year. When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> delivered its 32.65-metre superyacht X-treme 105, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, it was quite literally the ‘talk of the town’, and when she debuted at <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2022">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> the quay was awash with amazement. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255560/image/large-94c48888fcef698d75ab0d933383b59d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255560"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> is radically practical and it’s easy to pass her off as a traditional monohull with a large aft deck for tender storage; but behind her taut muscular design is an unusual and complex piece of engineering: a novel aft deck that can be hydraulically lowered below the waterline to safely launch and retrieve a large tender. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255483/image/large-afea7a6a5101cf22d6d8ec50c7f91540.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255483">The seed of inspiration was sown by her owners, who wanted a multipurpose aft deck: tender storage, a deep but safe swimming pool for their grandchildren, and somewhere to host intimate dinner parties. This all had to be squeezed into a 32.65-metre platform. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4789" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bernd Weel Design (Company)">Bernd Weel Design</a> was the studio behind stylish, muscular and very attractive exterior design. But the big question, though: will it work? And who better to put the challenge to than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>?&nbsp;“We’re not afraid of a challenge,” Casper Marelis, Naval Architect &amp; Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, told SuperYacht Times. “But this really was a major one, and we’ve definitely learnt a lot from this project.” The biggest learning curve, not only for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> but for the industry, was engineering a system that could deploy and retrieve a large tender, without the use of a crane. It was a major undertaking – and one that has never been done before. It also came with an added benefit: ease of boarding for both crew and guests. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255481/image/large-96bbf6726a378615aad31a2d2b201ba5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255481"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> features a traditional motor yacht hull, but from amidships, her long aft is divided between two hulls, with the central divide making space for the tender lift that includes a lengthy pool. The platform can be lowered, in between the two hulls collecting seawater and then raised again, to create a pool. The maximum depth of the pool is 6-foot but it can be completely customised for when the younger members of the family are enjoying a swim. When underway the pool floor is hydraulically lifted, turning the aft deck into a wide, flat multi-functional space.“Compared to a ‘normal’ catamaran hull the deck above/between the two hulls on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> which normally absorbs the forces created by waves is missing,” Marelis explained. “So this means theoretically the PS hull can move up and the SB hull can move down. These forces all transfer to the connection point to the monohull instead of the deck above. An extensive ‘Finite Elements Method’ short FEM calculation made it possible to analyse these forces and the resulting tensions in the structure and made it possible to strengthen the problem areas very precisely. To give you an example, there are parts which had to be 40mm thick high tensile steel while without the fold down platform the thickness could be 5mm normal steel.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255480/image/large-5b3817c529eabb79a5ea8c0d139db18c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255480"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> conducted rigorous FEM analysis of the total hull construction very early on in the process, and in direct conversation with classification society and flag state. Even though this was novel, the studio was determined to actualise the owner’s wishes. Coincidently, after devising a method for the system to raise and lower, the pool was relatively easy to engineer.&nbsp;“The forces on the system depend on how much of a closed volume (air) must be pushed underwater. So we made the structure of the platform hollow above the waterline to minimise this volume. This left a big ‘empty space’ which could also house a pool. This can fill up while the system lowers. And although almost 14 tonnes of water has to be lifted afterwards, the closed volume of the platform will push this extra weight upwards.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255559/image/large-4eb454ec2d910f2e0bfe6612c0786252.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255559">Naturally though, such a radical design was to cause waves throughout the vessel and more challenges arose, especially after a last-minute request to add a garage at midships: where to place the engine room?“With the last minute change it meant that all the equipment moved aft, but also the structural parts like the engine seating. This meant a lot of extra weight in the aft ship for which the hull form had to be adapted. More weight in the multihull arms also meant more forces and vibrations which had to be accounted for,” Marelis said. “Due to the addition of a tender garage the multihull arms turned into the engine rooms. This meant splitting the engine rooms, so doubling up on multiple systems while the space got smaller. But this also meant moving the propshafts outboard which has a negative effect on flow towards the propeller. To have a proper water flow towards the propellers steering nozzles were added.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255484/image/large-a138625aca462766f27a269e9675b4d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255484">The FEM calculation was an integral part of the aft section of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, but for the forward section was treated as normal. This helps reduce lead time as it “made it possible to start building the forward section already while a lot more engineering time was created to be spent on the difficult aft ship section.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255482/image/large-7a7c182b4234e98892340a113c0b5306.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255482">But the aft deck is just one part of the story. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> also has a large enclosed tender garage, accommodation for 10 guests, and a dedicated crew apartment – all within a 200 GT package.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> truly defies the impossible, and when pressed if <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> is looking at other ways to revolutionise yacht design, Marelis said: “We are up to the challenge for sure, we try to implement new ideas in our own concepts like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/55323" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Designing with Diana: Lifting the lid on the 70m superyacht design Project Kaizen (2022-06-29 15:00:00 +0200)">Kaizen</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/50287" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design and Exmar Yachting unveil new hydrogen superyacht concept: Blue Angel (2019-09-05 11:00:00 +0200)">Blue Angel</a> for instance. But if an owner or shipyard has some wild idea like with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, we are open to investigate and hopefully realise it.”

A paradigm shift in yachting: Diana Yacht Design and the 33m superyacht Lady Fleur

After attempting to meet up during a very busy boot Dusseldorf, we finally had the chance to sit down with Nick Gelevert, Founder and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> over Teams in early February. Nick comes from a long line of yacht brokers, his grandfather Hans Lengers founding the Netherlands’ first brokerage. Today Nick is both the CEO of the ‘first Dutch superyacht charter company’ <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> with seven international offices and an impressive portfolio of pedigree yachts, and the Sales Director of brokerage firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/359" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lengers Yachts (Company)">Lengers</a>. With expansion always on his mind, Nick has much in store for the boutique charter firm. SYT found out more. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262239/image/large-028247e85db04278e4d7d6c2adfec517.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262239">With a legacy of brokerage in your family, was it always your plan to become a broker?I was born and raised in the midst of the yachting industry, and of course it came to my mind from a young age that I might work in the industry as well. My grandfather started selling yachts in the 1970s and there was also a boat building business within the family, so yachting is truly part of my family heritage. When the time came for me to start my first business however, I decided to break from the family tradition and I founded a company within the real estate industry. I think it was partly a youthful rebellion – I was only 23 – but I quickly realised that I’d made a mistake not following my passion for the yachting industry.I had been an active and competitive sailor from the age of eight, racing every week, and of course having grown up within my family, yachting was truly where my heart lay. So I &nbsp;decided to pivot the concept I’d created within the real estate industry, and do something similar within yachting. The business became <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters</a>; the first AirBnB for boats. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/69988/image/large-e5de394c61cf3a6b29fbcc9408e9bf14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/69988">So how did an AirBnB for boats transform into a superyacht charter brokerage house?In 2015 we launched the platform and were the first in the world to do so. There were some other early adopters but we grew very quickly, operating in 63 countries with 12,000 boats available for rent. It was a successful beginning but we quickly realised that in order to become a truly profitable business, we would need a huge operational network. Boats are nothing like houses; they need work, maintenance and expansive shoreside support.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/50182/image/large-00c42362b1bed144ada7b119cd9afc4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50182">Why do you think that the company has done so well – how do you stand out from the crowd?At the same time as I was having these thoughts, clients from Lengers were generating leads and asking questions about Boatsters and enquiring if I could assist them with yacht charter. From these leads came a very organic transition into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a>, where we began to work with crewed yachts above 20-metres. Not long after this transition, we took Boatsters offline and I focused my energies on the development of the superyacht charter business. Since that decision we’ve opened international offices, are managing some very exciting yachts and expect to double our fleet in 2023. The company is positive and profitable and with the direction we’re currently going, we will be one of the top players in the charter industry within a few years.&nbsp;I believe that our approach is what makes us stand out. We are a boutique charter company, and we don't have aspirations to be the biggest, we want to provide the best service to a limited number of clients. We have regular contact with owners, we offer a personal concierge service for onshore support, we are incredibly active and make our clients really feel how much we value them. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216778/image/large-e3b74dc8cf7cf04994e4b19dd6e7c678.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216778">What has it been like breaking into an industry that has been dominated by long standing and large companies, such as&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a>?When we set out we knew it would be like David and Goliath, but I have always enjoyed a challenge. My aspiration when we set out was to establish <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> as the industry’s first Dutch charter house, just as my grandfather was the first Dutch broker. I am happy to say we’ve achieved that goal and now we are looking to the next challenge.&nbsp;The yachting industry has an obsession with being the biggest, with companies claiming ‘the biggest charter fleet’ or the most charters completed, but what does that actually mean for the client? Very likely it means an impersonal approach, with yachts being managed by a conglomerate rather than a person &nbsp;– we do not aspire to become that kind of business!&nbsp;What are your plans for the future for the business?The next stage is expansion. We’ve built a base from which the company can grow exponentially and my attention first will be to make sure that our services are the best they can be. We aren’t going to be accepting any and all boats to the fleet, but really making sure that the yacht is able to offer clients the best services, with a stable crew and good knowledge base.&nbsp;In 2022 we had a revenue of over €12 million and with an expansion into the full spectrum of services including crewing and management, I expect that to see a stable increase this year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216755/image/large-6c1f9a59bba24e5170d83edfc3039cf0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216755">Finally, what advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?Firstly, focus on an aspect of this industry and be the best at that aspect. There are so many generalists within yachting and what there needs to be is more specialists. It is a really challenging class to win, and to then win the overall title is not easy. Looking back to August 1986, one can observe the humble beginnings of the Bucket Regattas, the very first of which was a hastily thrown-together affair in Nantucket, Massachusetts. The originary seeds of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket Regattas</a> were sown in a spirited discussion that took place at a high-society birthday celebration between several yacht owners concerning optimal yacht design and individual sailing prowess.With undisputed bragging rights to last an annum hailed as the grand prize, the following day seven sailing yachts raced on a make-shift 15 nautical mile course around Nantucket Sound. However, participants soon learned that camaraderie formed at sea between like-minded individuals was the greatest prize of all. Particularly last year, when it was very windy,” said Captain Newton. “Out on the eastern side of the island you get big seas and it is pretty breezy.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/29482/image/large-bedbc7adaa16fcaec8401eb16f2b4713.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29482">For casual sailing, Captain Newton recommended, “The group of islands off the north coast of the St Barths make it brilliant for sailing, as there are some pretty interesting routes.” Here, sailors can find a rugged sailing ground home to a wealth of secluded bays and uninhabited islands and islets. “It is a pretty spectacular place to sail,” Captain Newton continued, “You get a mix of the flat water on the Leeside and big waves out to the east.”St Barths is a charming and flirty Caribbean island with a reputation for its luxurious feel and glitz-studded, lively atmosphere. “St Barths is particularly busy during the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket</a>,” Captain Newton laughed. “It feels like the Caribbean French Riviera. The island is home to spectacular beaches and beach clubs, making it good fun.”

In 1992, Theissen was forced to leave his home and as a result, emigrated to Düsseldorf, Germany. He reached the semi-pro level in basketball; ultimately leading him to the U.S. before the age of 18. He decided to reconnect with his passion for the sea and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy.&nbsp;In 2005, Theissen began his career on the retail side of marine electronics in Palm Beach, Florida &amp; Viareggio, Italy, where he contributed to many high-profile projects, such as SY Maltese Falcon, a multimillion-dollar system and service deal with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5421" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Staten Island Yacht Sales (Company)">Staten Island Ferries</a>, and multiple bespoke yacht new-build &amp; refit projects in America, Italy, Turkey, and Croatia.
